3 good reasons to visit Cyprus in the spring!
Unlike some holiday destinations in Europe, Cyprus is a consistently sunny and warm place to visit any time of the year. The island sees an incredible 340 days of sunshine and is renowned the world over for its gorgeous blue skies, blue flag beaches and easy paced Mediterranean lifestyle.
For those of us living in colder climes spring is a fantastic time to visit Cyprus, not least because by April/May the thermometer has reached swimsuit temperatures (around the low 20s) and whilst the rest of us back home are still waking up to cold April showers, holidaymakers in Cyprus are soaking up warm sunny days, relaxing poolside or exploring the beautiful coastline & countryside.
The landscape in Cyprus during spring is truly spectacular. From the middle of March, the island is ablaze with a stunning array of wildflowers and orchids. The countryside is lusciously green and the scent of wild herbs permeates the air. So spring is the perfect time of the year for lovers of the great outdoors who want to explore the islands walking trails and cycle routes without blowing a gasket in the summer heat!
Top recommendations for visitors to Cyprus in spring!
Walk the Prophitis Elias – Kionia Trail
Walking in Cyprus during the Spring is a nature lovers dream. After the wetter months of winter, the island is green and alive with flora and fauna. A total of 52 designated walking trails have been created and these trails truly highlight the beautiful landscapes and strong Mediterranean character of the island. By walking them, you can see a treasure trove of varied fauna and flora, as well as the remnants of the island’s mining heritage and other interesting monuments.
The Prophitis Elias – Kionia hike is for the more experienced hiker, but offers beautiful scenic views and takes in the Prophet Elias Monastery at the top of Mount Profitis which is the highest point of the whole island. After the climb to the top, you will be rewarded with incredible views, especially at sunset! For more information on hiking in Cyprus visit www.visitcyprus.com
Cycle the Akamas peninsula
If weaving around country lanes and feeling the wind in your hair is your thing then grab a bike and helmet and hit the roads. During spring the roads are quieter and the cooler temperature means fewer water stops and less chance of overheating. If you prefer to be off-road then there are also hundreds of kilometres of wide gravel trails leading through forested river valleys on the western slopes of the Troodos Mountains which are perfect for MTBs.
The Akamas Peninsula is one of our favourite places to visit – you can explore it on foot or bike whilst petrol heads can go nuts in a 4×4, ATV or quad bike! The peninsula is one of the last coastal regions on the island to remain untouched by development and is designated as a National Park. We recommend hiring a bike and taking in its forests, hidden bays and incredible limestone gorges. Once you’ve built up a sweat, there is nothing better than diving into the crystal clear water of the legendary Blue Lagoon! Cycling routes are mapped out throughout the island by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), for more details on all the trails available visit www.visitcyprus.com.
And relax… (on the beach)
After all that exercising in nature, we recommend you make the most of the beach and soak up some rays, relax to the gentle sound of the waves lapping against the shore, and do this without the noise of crowds and water sports. Beaches at this time of the year aren’t busy and whilst the water temp may be on the cold side for you in Spring (18 degrees in April and 20 degrees in May), the beaches are an oasis of peace and calm, so pack your beach bag with a good book and relax under blue skies. Cyprus has a bevvy of incredible beaches, check out our recommendations for some of our favourites beaches in Cyprus.
