Fig Tree Bay: The Centre of Protaras
Fig Tree Bay is the beach that made Protaras famous, and staying beside it means holidaying in the middle of everything. The bay is a broad curve of pale, fine sand facing a rocky islet a short swim offshore, and the water between is the postcard: clear, calm and shallow well out from the beach. It regularly appears in lists of Europe's best beaches, and unlike many entries on those lists, it delivers on an ordinary Tuesday.
Life on the Bay
This is the walk-to-everything address in Protaras. Behind the beach runs the resort's main street, with restaurants, bars, bakeries, souvenir shops and supermarkets open late through the season, and the palm lined promenade heads north along the coast towards Pernera. Water sports operate straight off the sand, from pedalos to parasailing, and sunbeds are plentiful even if the front row goes early in August. Practicalities are effortless. The bus along the coast road connects the bay with Pernera, Konnos and Ayia Napa, taxis wait along the strip, and everything from beach toys to after sun is sold within two minutes of the sand. In high summer the bay is busiest between late morning and mid afternoon; villa guests learn quickly that the best swims are before nine and after five, when the light is better anyway.
Who It Suits
First time visitors who want the full resort experience, households with teenagers who need somewhere to walk to in the evening, and anyone planning a holiday without a hire car. It is the liveliest part of Protaras, which is either the selling point or the warning, depending on your party. Light sleepers and seekers of silence will be happier ten minutes north in Pernera or south at Konnos Bay, both an easy hop back to the bay by day.
